2011 - My second year of blogging in Brittany

I felt I would like to share some of the photographs I have taken so far this year and some from other years. I live in a beautiful part of Brittany and just love being here. It's a lovely place to photograph and enjoy being in through all the seasons and hopefully this blog will show you where I live my life.

More bats last night

Last night, after I'd published yesterday's post I found this really tiny bat on the floor by the door.  I photographed it next to a lipstick to show the scale - it was very tiny.

Then, when I came back from the field there was another bat in the house, this time on the floor in the kitchen area. It was much bigger than the other two and after taking some photos I put it with the other two into the little hen house.

I've been playing Short Mat Bowls all day and went up to the field on the way home.  Today I collected five eggs from 15-16 potential laying hens.  They have really dropped off laying and I can only put it down to the weather which is alternately very wet and very warm throughout the day and it's been like this for weeks.   Although five eggs is not a number, it's the best for ten days.  Hens seem to like everything to stay the same.  They like their nest box in the same place with the same hens - hate it when new ones are introduced, the same weather - they don't do well with change.

No more bats so far today, so I hope it stays that way.

Three things I like:

1.   Getting a really huge bag of stale bread from the supermarket for the hens, ducks, goats, and rabbits for the princely sum of three euros.
2.   Cutting slices off the lovely boiled collar bacon joint I have just cooked - it tastes delicious.
3.   Whizzing home in the sunshine with the hood down on the car and arriving just in time to put the hood up again as it starts to rain.

  1. Are the bats dead or alive? Do your hens like bats??? I'm confused! :)))))
p.s. if they are alive, you have impressive bat handling skills! ha ha

  2. That first one has to be a baby one. The little ones round here are all Pipistrelles so I'd guess that's what yours are.

Did you see my rabbit vs. hare photos on facebook the other day? They look identical to your ones in the previous post and I've asked on two different social networks and the jury is out - more say young hare than rabbit - they are definitely not adult hares but the question is, is it a leveret or a bunny? Personally I think it's a bunny and I hope it doesn't come back!

  3. The bats were alive when placed outside in a disused henhouse and aren't there now, Melody.

I think, Mandy, that the larger one was too big for a Pipistrelle, but I could be wrong.

In my humble opinion they were definitely leverets, much more angular than bunnies/rabbits and their ears were longer than rabbits ears too.

  4. Hi Sandra
I have bats that live in the big wall outside the back of my house and each evening, my cats line up on the landing window ledge to watch them fly out. The cats make this little squeaking noise as the bats fly past outside the window and it keeps them amused for ages ..... it's like cat TV :-)

  5. Hello Kay When the bats were flying round the sitting room the cats were leaping off the back of the settee trying to catch them, but they swoop at such unpredictable angles that luckily they didn't get any. None since Tuesday, so I'm hoping it was a visitation which has now finished. Sandra
